5 Benefits Veterans Are Entitled to But You Might Not Know About

Veterans who end their services with the military are entitled to benefits to ensure they have the support they need to succeed in their civilian life. However, figuring out and managing their monthly VA benefits and additional benefits can be complicated and overwhelming for veterans. Many veterans need to understand these benefits in order to take advantage of vital and additional care. However, an experienced VA lawyer can help you get the VA benefits you deserve and walk you through what additional benefits you could receive.

5 Benefits Veterans are Entitled to But You Might Not Know About

"A November 2022 Allsup Survey finds at least 4 in 10 Veterans have service-related disability, but less than one-third file VA disability claims and do not understand their disability benefits. They find the process unclear and miss out on critical care and resources that might be available to them even years later."

Five Additional Benefits Veterans Can Receive

Below are five additional benefits that veterans could qualify for. These benefits can help with housing, education, and employment.

Home Loan Benefit

The VA Home Loan Guaranty program allows veterans to purchase a home with no down payment and a competitive interest rate. Any veteran in receipt of VA  disability compensation is entitled to have the 2% VA funding fee waived. This benefit can be used multiple times, and there is no income limit.

Disability Housing Grants for Veterans

Depending on the severity of a veteran's service-connected conditions, they could qualify for assistance in purchasing a house that accommodates their disability or the option to update their current home to meet their needs better. As of 2023, you can receive up to $109,986 for 2023 if a veteran qualifies.

Temporary disability rating after surgery

If you are a veteran with an upcoming surgery that will leave you temporarily unable to work, you may be eligible for a temporary 100% disability rating. The requirements are you must be in the hospital for at least 21 days or immobilized following surgery for at least a month. This temporary disability rating provides additional monthly VA compensation that affords veterans the time to heal.

Education Benefits

The VA offers a variety of education benefits to veterans and their dependents, including tuition assistance, grants, and loans. These benefits can be used to attend college, vocational school, or on-the-job training.

VA Clothing Allowance

Some veterans have disabilities requiring prosthetic or orthopedic equipment such as a wheelchair. Or veterans may have skin conditions requiring medicine that damages clothing. In these cases, the VA has an annual clothing allowance that gives veterans money each year to buy new clothes to replace damaged items.

Additional Federal Benefits

In addition to these federal benefits, many states and local governments offer additional benefits to veterans. For example, some states offer property tax exemptions, free or reduced public transportation, and preference in hiring for state jobs.

Here are some other benefits that veterans may not be aware of:

  • VA Caregiver Support Program: This program provides financial assistance and support to caregivers of veterans with service-connected disabilities.

  • VA Homeless Grant and Per Diem Program: This program funds organizations that provide housing and supportive services to homeless veterans.

  • VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program: This program helps veterans with service-connected disabilities to find and maintain employment.

  • VA Survivors Benefits: The VA offers a variety of benefits to the survivors of veterans, including death pensions, educational assistance, and burial benefits.

For more information on VA survivor benefits, this article discusses Chapter 35 of the Veterans Benefits, Education, and Training (VBE&T) Act of 2002, also known as the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) program. Chapter 35 provides education and training benefits to eligible dependents and survivors of Veterans who have died or become disabled while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability.
